Enabling More Proactive and Connected Care

22 Sep 2026

Everyone deserves good healthcare. Health and care professionals work hard to provide great care to their patients. Sometimes, however, the structures and processes of healthcare systems can get in the way of the individuals, teams and communities at the heart of the ecosystem and the excellent care that professionals want to provide.

A female mixed race doctor, consults with a young female patient in her office. She is seated at her desk, wearing a light blue semi-casual shirt, has a stethoscope around her neck and is leaning on her desk with her elbow. She is listening attentively to the patient describe her symptoms. The patient is dressed casually and has her back to the camera.

Caremixer (T/A Carebell) is solving this problem by providing a communication and coordination platform that connects frontline health and care professionals around the individual patient, in real time, across teams and organisational boundaries, while working alongside the existing systems and records they use. For patients, this creates the potential for earlier intervention, more proactive care and a greater say in the management of their health, care and wellbeing.

Carebell joined the DeepTech Catalyst Health (DTC Health) incubation programme, a collaboration between UKRI-STFC and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, in July 2025. Now at the mid-point of their incubation, Carebell has already made significant progress and has begun deploying its platform in real-world healthcare settings.

Challenge

As an early-stage company, Caremixer has been focused on advancing its product, Carebell, towards commercialisation and adoption within the NHS to support frontline health and care teams and their patients.

However, demonstrating the full value of the Carebell platform requires showing that it can work across complex, real-world health and care settings, provide genuine benefits to multidisciplinary teams, and meet the NHS’s rigorous requirements around security, information governance, clinical safety and interoperability. While all of these are essential, progressing them alongside core product development can be challenging for an early-stage company.

Without additional support, building the Carebell platform and deploying it in real healthcare settings risked being delayed, limiting the company’s ability to generate the evidence needed to demonstrate the impact of the technology for health and care teams and the people they support.

Solution

Through DTC Health, Carebell received funding alongside strategic and technical support from STFC and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

Crucially, the programme provided more than financial support. It provided access to a valuable ecosystem of expertise and support, including access to data and AI expertise at the Hartree Centre, intellectual property and research and development experts, and introductions to NHS stakeholders and networks. This support has played an important role in accelerating both the technical and commercial progress of the company.

That relationship has also developed into a focused collaboration with the Hartree Centre, exploring how data science and machine learning could add value to the unique cross-organisational coordination data created through Carebell. The project will help Caremixer develop a roadmap for the responsible use of data and AI within Carebell, identifying where these technologies could create meaningful value for health and care teams and helping inform the platform’s future data strategy.

With this wider support, Carebell has already delivered significant progress across product development, team growth, commercial engagement and funding. The platform has moved into real-world deployment, with learning from frontline users helping to shape its continued development and the next phase of structured evaluation and wider NHS adoption.

For the second half of Carebell’s incubation, DTC Health will provide continued support in areas such as data analytics, regulatory pathways, and NHS procurement and adoption routes, which will be important in supporting the company’s continued development and scaling.

Benefits

Through the incubation programme, Carebell has been able to bring its technical development fully in-house, complete the technical development of its prototype build, and move into deployment in real healthcare settings from March 2026.

Bringing technical development in-house has helped Carebell improve the pace, quality and strategic control of delivery. This shift has significantly accelerated product development cycles and enabled much closer alignment with end-user and NHS system requirements.

Commercially, Carebell has refined its proposition through greater engagement with frontline clinicians, multidisciplinary teams and system partners. This engagement has demonstrated strong appetite for the platform and helped identify focused opportunities for deployment, co-production and evaluation, through which Carebell can demonstrate its value to professionals, organisations and the people they support.

“STFC’s DTC Health has been a step-change for us, providing access and momentum that have opened up genuinely transformative opportunities. Just as importantly, it has connected us with expertise and people who have challenged our thinking and helped us turn an ambitious idea into something being shaped with the health and care professionals who will actually use it.

Our developing work with the Hartree Centre is a great example of that, giving us the opportunity to explore, responsibly and from an early stage, how the unique data Carebell creates could support the next generation of the platform.”
